The Atlas of Middle-earth

The Atlas of Middle-earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad is an atlas of J. R. R. Tolkien’s fictional realm of Middle-earth.

It is a reference book for Tolkien’s writings such as The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings, and includes many detailed maps of the lands described in those books.

The maps are treated as if they are of real landscapes, drawn according to the rules of a real atlas. For each area the history of the land is taken into account, as well as geography on a larger scale and from there maps are drawn. Discussion includes suggestions as to the geology that could explain various formations, and points that are contradictory between multiple accounts.

City maps and floor plans for important buildings are also included, an absolute must for any Tolkien fan, enjoy...

Turisas - Battle Metal - The Varangian Way - Rasputin

With these two albums, Turisas are crowned the kings of Viking/Folk Metal or whatever way you like to classify this band. They built their own sound, made it original but still with enough melody to make a hoard of Barbarians sing along, before after and during battle. (depending with whom they fought)

When I used the word melody, I didn't mean cheesy ballads or upbeat songs ready for consumption in a football stadium. What I had in mind was melodies where the sounds are polished but still noisy and distorted, welded together with atmospheric chorus suitable for Odin's comeback to Earth.

Rasputin (Boney M original) makes you cry for more on the basis that it enriches the original version, something very rare on a cover. Turisas created the original battle metal like Thor would have done if there were guitars in Nordic Mythology.

Korpiklaani - Keep On Galloping

Korpiklaani are one of my favourite bands at the moment, they really deserve the term 'Folk Metal', a term so misused and so many times.

"Keep on Galloping" is just a small taste of what this band can deliver, enjoy it and buy the album. If there's a band that deserves some support, Korpiklaani is the one.

Can't wait for the new album, "Korven Kuningas" but for the time being, here's the single.

Dragonheart

Epic film about a brave knight, Bowen (Dennis Quaid) and his companion, the 18-foot-high, 43-foot-long dragon he names Draco (Sean Connery), the last of his species, join in a heroic battle to free a country held in an iron grip by its tyrannical ruler, Einon (David Thewlis), to whom both knight and dragon are connected in fateful ways.
Draco, the dragon, was in my opinion a gorgeous creature and it didn't make it worse that he sounded like Sean Connery. :) Dennis Quaid is always enjoyable, Dina Meyer is lovely as Kara. So what if some of the plot is not 'believable'. It's a fantasy. That's what epic tales are all about, imagination. So, when and if you watch/re-watch this movie, do so with an open heart and suspend your disbelief and analytical minds. This is fantasy in the truest sense, If you have to be analytical,do it about the soundtrack.

The Wizar'd - Smouldering Sinners

The Wizar'd are a Doom Metal band from Australia, which makes them the original Wizards of Oz.
To the readers lucky enough of not having English as their first language or indeed living in a country where the Anglo-Saxon lingo is not the official, heres the explanation:
Oz is a name given to Australia, that welcoming continent, where the sun shines, Kylie Minogue clones flash their asses on Bondai beach and theres no living record of Doom Metal bands.

The Wizar'd play Doom Metal classic with lyrics about the Occult but not of encyclopaedic standards and the vocals fuelled by large amounts of lager are suited to their roots, same way as the backbone of their songs fits early Sabbath or Celtic Frost

Sit back and let these Doom fiends invade your personal space.

The Wizar'd are:
Ol' Rusty Vintage Wizard Master - vocals, guitar
Sir Nun Piss - guitar
Blackie the Crimson Heretic of a Thousand Eyes - bass
Iron Tyrant - drums

Smouldering Sinners - Single, 2007

3-The Wizard 5:07

Fairyland - Of Wars in Osyrhia ~ Review~

And So Came The Storm - beautiful intro, progressing into epic lyrics and high speed rhythm. Reminds me of Carmina Burana.

Ride With The Sun - fast pace, melodic keyboards and catchy chorus, this song sets the scene for the rest of the album.

Doryan The Enlightened - a cinematographic intro that wouldn't be out of place in the 'Lord of The Rings' score. A more operatic tune, where Elisa Martin (ex Dark Moor) proves herself the perfect choice for the job.

The Storyteller - starts off with a very memorable keyboards, and then comes the vocals and symphonic effects, very epic. Possibly the most memorable track of the album.

Fight For Your King - another song where Philippe Giordana and company do "exactly what it says on the tin" (ie, typical symphonic/power metal tune) Don't play it too loud or your mum will be humming it for weeks!

On The Path To Fury - the intro begins with a haunting voice, followed by the choir and fast paced melody. Throw in some great guitar solos and you have a really good tune.

Rebirth - this song is a little slower than the rest, but still dramatic. Haunting flutes and strings in the background give a more symphonic feel, and superb vocals.

The Fellowship - keeping in line with the standard set so far, but there's no increment in quality or variety. A little monotonous.

A Dark Omen - fast paced start and powerful vocals. One of the best tracks on this album, a classic tune, again Fairyland (I refuse to comment on the band name) delivers a great piece with stunning keyboards and guitar riffs.

The Army Of The White Mountain - a gentle medieval type intro serves as a start to this instrumental which together with the intro in "Doryan The Enlightened" could easily make their way into the Lord Of The Rings soundtrack.
Philippe Giordana shows his talentsuperbly, someone in Hollywood give this man a job!

Of Wars In Osyrhia - the grand finalé, with melodies and chorous to die for. Capable of inspiring a 95 year old to rise up from his deathbed and jump on the first available white horse decapitating Orcs on his way to personally overlook Sauron's dead.

All in all, Of Wars in Osyrhia is an excellent debut album from Philippe Giordana and sous muchachos. The addition of talented vocalist Elisa Martin - just check out Dark Moor for proof - was a stroke of genius on the part of Giordana, but it didn't last to the second album which we will be reviewing soon.

We don't know about you but thats how we like our Epic/Symphonic Power Metal in Confessions of a Vagabond. Just a bit of advice, don't wear the t-shirt in English speaking countries!!

BloodRayne

Rayne (Loken) is a "dhampire" (half vampire, half human) who has been passing the time as a sideshow freak. A group of undead assassins (led by Michael Madsen and featuring Michelle Rodriguez) decide to take her back to their secret castle keep.

There they will prepare for an all-out war with villain Kagan (Ben Kingsley), who wants three sacred talismans that will help him rule the world. Rayne holds the key to capturing these magic lucky charms. As she learns to kick ass with a couple of impractical swords, blood flows and subplots sink, all leading to the final confrontation between evil and... sort of evil.
This films counts as well with the presence of the Rock singer Meat Loaf

Not the best Epic film, to say the least but simple enough to keep you slightly entertained during a Winter afternoon.
Enjoy

Nightwish

Nightwish is a Finnish metal band formed in 1996 in the town of Kitee, Finland. The band's leader, keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, composes songs that are often classified as either symphonic metal or power metal; their musical style has also been described as a symphonic metal variant, called opera metal. Nevertheless, Nightwish is considered one of the main developers of the symphonic metal genre, which encompasses similar bands such as Therion, Epica, Sonata Arctica, Edenbridge, Lunatica, and Visions of Atlantis.

The band currently consists of Anette Olzon (vocals), Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards), Jukka Nevalainen (drums), Marco Hietala (bass and vocals) and Emppu Vuorinen (guitars). (Before 2005, the vocalist was Tarja Turunen. She currently performs as a solo artist under the name of Tarja.)

The original idea of Nightwish was majorly inspired by The Gathering, and the idea was to use keyboards, acoustic guitars and the operatic vocals of their then singer Tarja Turunen. This idea was changed majorly in 1997, as a drummer was added, and the acoustic guitar was replaced by an electric guitar.

The idea of using operatic vocals was changed dramatically with their third album Wishmaster (2000), and more so on future albums, especially their latest, Dark Passion Play (2007). In 2001, Holopainen asked Sami Vänskä, their bassist since 1998, to leave, and he was replaced with Marco Hietala (Tarot, ex-Sinergy), leaving Sinergy. The bassist would, apart from playing his instrument, also perform male vocals.

Century Child (2002) marked a new changed in Nightwish' music, as they used a live orchestra on several songs, to get a more present feeling of classical music. This was developed further with their US breakthrough Once (2004) and Dark Passion Play (2007), the latter being the first to use orchestra on all of the songs.

In October 2005, after touring for their Once album, the four other members of Nightwish decided that it was best to continue Nightwish without Tarja, a feeling they expressed through an open letter. This was due to the fact that they felt that her husband Marcelo Cabuli and commercial interests had changed her attitude towards Nightwish. Tuomas Holopainen gave the letter to Turunen after the last concert of the tour. In spring 2007, 35-year-old Anette Olzon from Katrineholm, Sweden was announced to replace Turunen.

The band released a new single, Eva, featuring their new singer in May, 2007. It was successed by another single, Amaranth, on August 22, and a studio album in late September entitled Dark Passion Play. Dark Passion Play is so far their best selling album. The third international single of the album was Bye Bye Beautiful, released on February 15, 2008.

Lacuna Coil

Lacuna Coil is an Italian metal band formed in Milan, Italy, in 1996. The name means an "empty spiral". They were formerly known as Sleep of Right and Ethereal, counting various musical influences as doom metal and progressive metal.

Their music is inspired by gothic and romantic imagery, using melodic guitar lines, and alternating heavy and light vocals. According to themselves, the band is influenced by Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Septic Flesh and Type O Negative, among others.

Lacuna Coil has been gaining increased fame in recent times not only due to their music, but also because of their lead singer, Cristina Scabbia. She has appeared in countless music magazines and even on the cover of some European Maxim magazines. Along with Nightwish and Arch Enemy she is bringing some femininity to what has always been a male-dominated genre.

Tygers of Pan Tang - Live at Nottingham Rock City 1981

Recorded back in April 1981, this concert features the band during the "Spellbound" tour. Becoming a quintet with the recent addition of John Sykes, and the replacement of flat-voiced Jess Cox with Jon Deverill, TOPT's popularity sky-rocketed in the days of the NWOBHM. The band performs songs from their first 2 albums (Wild Cat and Spellbound) and the disc is full of energy. Deverill sounds a bit out of breath, and the renditions are not quite as 'tight' as the studio versions. Still, this release explodes with enthusiasm, and marks an interesting document in this line-up's too short career.

Maybe the band would have survived the MTV New Wave onslaught which permeated radio listening choices after 1982. The potential was there but it never fully manifested itself.
This is a very good LIVE collection of Tyger tunes. The quality is not quite UFO's 'Strangers in the Night' but definitely good with a few flaws. Overall the songs were well mixed and there is a nice selection of Tyger classics. The notes inside the cd mention the band was ill during this recording. I wish other bands I have seen play this well when sick.

Jon Deverill's vocals are powerful. Almost overpowering on the songs from the Wild Cat album, but nonetheless pure Tygers. Weir and Sykes play extremely well together. Once in awhile you hear the Sykes flair and flash but if you are a true Tygers Of Pan Tang fan you appreciate the music from the band, not individual members.

In the early 80's I really thought the Tygers of Pan Tang would be the next British/European supergroup behind Priest, Maiden and the Scorpions. I was wrong, but they are still one of my favourite groups and fortunately these songs have been made available to fans like myself and others. Where Iron Maiden played gigs to tens of thousands of fans, TOPT never achieved these levels of recognition. The band is still alive and kicking today just with a different line up. Another reason I really like this album - it was made in my home city ~ Nottingham!

Spellblast - Horns of Silence

Spellblast is a power metal band from Bergamo, Italy which uses strong folk influences that seize hold in the lyrical contents of the band.

Till now the band has released a promo cd called "Ray of Time" (2004) and a full length album: "Horns of Silence" (2007).
They can be easily compared to Elvenking because their [Elvenking] singer Damnagoras appears as a guest singer on some tracks of the debut album.

One more album for all the professional escapists who like me can't put up with bands talking about political shit or their lost loves.

Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge

Alestorm are a Scottish band formerly known as Battleheart that plays Epic/Folk Metal with pirate themed lyrics. Without a doubt one of my favourite bands in their style due to the fast melodic guitars, drums capable of sinking an Armada vessel at 200 yards, all wrapped up with proper pirate vocals and chorus so catchy that even a hardened pirate like Davy Jones would break into song.

Tracks like "Captain Morgan's Revenge" and "Wenches and Mead" are timeless, and hopefully will be around longer than many others from the same genre. Considering this is only their first album and Alestorm are a fairly new band, I ask you to buy the original and support them!

Ghoultown - Tales From the Dead West

Dark Psychobilly and Spaghetti Western with no cheese.
If The Misfits and Danzig teamed up with Enrio Morricone and made a western movie, this would be the soundtrack!

Black 'n Blue - One Night Only Live 1988

Black 'N Blue was a Heavy Metal band that was labeled to be the "next big thing" in the mid 80's, but despite having a loyal fan base, they never broke through commercially. The group was formed by Jaime St. James (vocals), Tommy Thayer (guitar), Jeff Warner (guitar), Patrick Young (bass) and Pete Holmes (drums) in Portland, Oregon in 1981. By relocating to Los Angeles, they made their debut on the first Metal Massacre compilation with the song "Chains Around Heaven", before landing a major label deal.

The band opened for Kiss in 1985, and was able to reach a much larger audience, yet it failed to translate into sales for the boys. Kiss' Gene Simmons even produced the In Heat album, but even that couldn't sell the band to the public, and by 1989 the group had disbanded. Lack of a hit single seemed to be the missing ingredient for this hard rocking quintet. By opening for some of the biggest names in the metal scene, the band was able to sell roughly a million units of their albums, but with expectations so high that just wasn't enough.

Since the groups demise, St. James has recorded with Freight Train Jane, Dry Rot and St. James. Thayer went on to record with Doro, Harlow and Shake The Faith. Holmes would form Monster with some ex-Malice members.

Black 'N Blue reformed in 1997 for a show that would be recorded and released as One Night Only - Live. The band would once again reform in 2003, with Shawn Sonnenschein filling in for Thayer (who is currently playing the Space Ace in Kiss); to work on a new album due for release called Hell Yeah! A big break came to St. James in 2004 when he replaced Jani Lane as the front man for multi-platinum rockers Warrant. Black 'N Blue is another band that just didn't get the recognition they deserved.

This CD is exactly what it states. A reunion concert "One Night Only Live." 10 Years after their demise. But they don't seem to miss a beat. Definitely one of the mid 80's metal bands that should have hit it big but didn't. They don't sound nearly as dated as some of the other bands from that era now.

If my info is correct this album is now out of print, if any of you know otherwise, please let me know.

Got Wood ?

This video gives the term "got wood" a all new meaning.

After I finished watching this video I was forced by a strange will and furiously wanked over some hardcore pics of a busty pornstar, at the same time that I let loud Doom Metal invade my personal stereo and thats when it came...an idea, I mean.

Had to do something to erase that video from my memory, didn't teenagers have enough with the threat of going blind ?
Doesn't such a horrible threat keep teenagers asleep with their hands off the meat and two veg?
Was it really necessary to scare the poor children with such a weird and life threatening dummy?

I doubt it...Wanking is healthy,wanking doesn't transmit S.T.D.s, wanking doesn't get your girlfriend pregnant.

I can't understand these Christians !?! If they don't want us to have sex before marriage, why not "legalize" the wank ? Make it official, let us wank in name of the Lord.

Yes, I do understand that this argument might be radical or perhaps strange to say the least, but try to imagine the Pope giving a speech on the benefits of a good wank before breakfast and another after dinner ? As long as we wash our hands, would say His Holiness, the act of wanking will be considered saintly, just be careful where you squirt because the Almighty is everywhere.

The Addams Family - Composed by Vic Mizzy

With one click you are transported back to the 60s right into the original Addams Family theme tunes. There's also other weird and wacky horror cult classic from the same era and all with a few scratches, pops and clicks like the old vinyl LP's just to ensure the most faithful audition.

Definitely an amazing source for Black and Doom Metal intros, samples or whatever other ways you can come up with of using such a huge collection of sounds and tunes.

Cryptic Slaughter - Money Talks

Formed in 1984,Cryptic Slaughter are one of the most important Hardcore bands to ever walk this soon to be bombarded Earth.

The original Speedcore merchants, Cryptic Slaughter dealt a West Coast hand into the late 80's Crossover movement, a movement that saw the normally warring armies of punk rock and thrash metal finally come together into a unified front bent on exposing social injustice and political hypocrisy. Powered by a previously unimagined sense of informed aggression, the band's uncompromising political stance and lightning-fast tempos ultimately proved too harsh for mainstream tastes, but their status as underground legends remains unquestioned.

Issued in 1986, the band's debut album Convicted introduced new bassist Rob Nicholson (freeing Crooks to focus on his rabid vocal delivery) and somehow crammed fourteen tracks into a violently giddy, adrenalin-charged half hour, every single cut spewing a torrent of anti-establishment bile and fury. Follow-up efforts like 1987's Money Talks and 1988's Stream Of Consciousness added only the smallest of sonic refinements, and kept the group's ever-expanding legion of fans happy by staying true to their original, raw and frenetic style.

Shock Troopers Italian Thrash / Hardcore / Metal

Shock Troopers were born in 2001 with the following line-up: Stefano - drums ; Fabrizio"METAL-PIG" - guitar ; Mario - bass ; Vincenzo - Vocals. They started playing punk rock music mainly influenced by Misfits, Ramones & Motorhead. In 2002 the band, after some little gigs in Palermo, they enlarged the line-up to five members: Claudia became the new bass player and Mario got on to play rhythm guitar.

During this period Shock Troopers turned into another music genre starting to play faster, louder and more aggressive! So, Shock Troopers started to sound like bands as DRI, SOD, old Agnostic Front and Suicidal Tendencies in the purest, oldest 80's crossover style! Later Luigi (former Feccia Tricolore's drummer) has come into the band with Fabietto(former Sonny Corleone's member)as new bass player in place of Claudia.

This line up has gone on for about two years in which the band has played in several gigs in palermo supporting other Sicilian and Italian bands, like WOPTIME, SONNY CORLEONE, FECCIA TRICOLORE, SKRUIGNERS, ROTTEN BOYS, THE KRUSHERS. In February 2004 the band recorded its first self produced demoCD, entitled "Bad Reality". This demo CD has got very good reviews on some Italian HC and Metal webzines.

2005 was a very troubled year: Luigi left the band and was temporarly substituted by Morgan, but this change didn't achieve good upshots. So Giorgio was called to become the new definitive drummer of the band. During the summer of the same year Fabietto left Sicily and the band too. Andrea(bass) is the latest new member of the family. This line-up saw the return on stage supporting HATEWORK and others... Brand new tracks, faster and louder than ever, are gonna be recorded in Circle Of Power Studios (Pa) during June 2006.
