Tygers of Pan Tang - Live at Nottingham Rock City 1981

Recorded back in April 1981, this concert features the band during the "Spellbound" tour. Becoming a quintet with the recent addition of John Sykes, and the replacement of flat-voiced Jess Cox with Jon Deverill, TOPT's popularity sky-rocketed in the days of the NWOBHM. The band performs songs from their first 2 albums (Wild Cat and Spellbound) and the disc is full of energy. Deverill sounds a bit out of breath, and the renditions are not quite as 'tight' as the studio versions. Still, this release explodes with enthusiasm, and marks an interesting document in this line-up's too short career.

Maybe the band would have survived the MTV New Wave onslaught which permeated radio listening choices after 1982. The potential was there but it never fully manifested itself.
This is a very good LIVE collection of Tyger tunes. The quality is not quite UFO's 'Strangers in the Night' but definitely good with a few flaws. Overall the songs were well mixed and there is a nice selection of Tyger classics. The notes inside the cd mention the band was ill during this recording. I wish other bands I have seen play this well when sick.

Jon Deverill's vocals are powerful. Almost overpowering on the songs from the Wild Cat album, but nonetheless pure Tygers. Weir and Sykes play extremely well together. Once in awhile you hear the Sykes flair and flash but if you are a true Tygers Of Pan Tang fan you appreciate the music from the band, not individual members.

In the early 80's I really thought the Tygers of Pan Tang would be the next British/European supergroup behind Priest, Maiden and the Scorpions. I was wrong, but they are still one of my favourite groups and fortunately these songs have been made available to fans like myself and others. Where Iron Maiden played gigs to tens of thousands of fans, TOPT never achieved these levels of recognition. The band is still alive and kicking today just with a different line up. Another reason I really like this album - it was made in my home city ~ Nottingham!
